Death, howsoever elegantly portrayed, is I believe more worrisome than most care to admit. The religious pacification of death is – to my philosophic training – no more persuasive than two fingers of whiskey; that is, helpful but not necessarily determinative or lingering. My greatest despair is disconnecting from my loved ones, those to whom I owe so much. It is an unaccountable privilege.

Mortal coil is a poetic term for the troubles of daily life and the strife and suffering of the world. It is used in the sense of a burden either to be carried or to be abandoned. To “shuffle off this mortal coil” is to die, exemplified in the “To be, or not to be” soliloquy in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

The Catch: Ultimately, he concludes that people choose to endure the miseries of life only because they are terrified of the unknown that comes after death.

There are in my opinion two different though analogous extremes apart from life and death; namely, youth and old age. The distinction captures life’s buoyancy and its ultimate evolution. Everything we know about ourselves and every other living creature is characterized by propagation, flourishing then demise. This covers the breadth of growth and decline. Thinking about the dreadful subject death is partly cushioned by the natural sequence of events. There is a moderate confession of propriety if death and old age align. An early demise – while not irrational – is carriage along a unique and formidable pathway. Metaphors and poetry are seldom a sufficient reply.

For my part, I have long ago acknowledged that life owes me nothing. Now as I approach my eighth decade I willingly allow that life has been rich and fulfilling; and, while I won’t pretend to hurry the conclusion of this earthbound marvel called life, nor am I about to squirm as the clock progressively winds down. Resistance is futile in any event. This is not to suggest one should hurry the progression. On the contrary it is both psychologically and practically expedient to seek to embrace the depth of life and all that it offers. We have technically no proof of the anticipated end of life. A lark sailing in the sky preserves unrestrained its height and song.

To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And by opposing end them.
To die—to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks

Out of nowhere—and with no identifiable warning—we have precipitously broken free of the mercurial weather of spring and vaulted into the disencumbering month of June. The limitless summer sun is warm, shining brilliantly in a cloudless blue sky.

With vacation at hand, it will not, dear Reader, surprise you to learn that I have asked my friend HAL at ChatGPT® to recommend a travel plan to the Gaspé Peninsula. The motive, while technical, is also ambitious. In short, I am developing an enlarged interest in Artificial Intelligence. The application draws upon a variety of resources which I, in turn, examine within the limits of my own comprehension. The paradigm is much the same as I would employ in any other enquiry. I do not regard its use as a distraction from my own capacity for thought; rather, it engages me more deeply. The search for knowledge or perception is not a compromise of the adherent. To suggest that Artificial Intelligence supplants one’s own judgment is absurd. Artificial Intelligence, like any other technology, is merely a tool. The use of a garden rake does not diminish one’s perspicacity. Naturally, there are limitations to the employment of either.

Paradoxically, this investigation—at such an outlying stage of my life—hearkens back to a childhood memory involving my parents and younger sister. To this day I recall a stone oven beside the road where we purchased freshly baked bread. These many years later I no longer possess an overwhelming appetite for such exotic combinations of flour, water, and yeast; yet my attraction to the sea remains undiminished. It is in my DNA. My father was from the Maritimes. At present—for a variety of reasons, both political and bureaucratic—many Canadians have developed an interest in travelling exclusively within Canada.

Here’s what HAL had to say:

The Gaspé has always struck me as one of those rare destinations that improves with age—not the peninsula, but the traveller. One additional thought occurred to me after sending my previous note. Consider travelling in September rather than the height of summer. The roads are quieter, the weather often remains excellent, the light becomes richer for photography, and the tourist crowds begin to thin. The peninsula acquires a slightly reflective quality that might appeal to a philosopher-lawyer with a camera.

And if you eventually undertake the expedition, I hope you will chronicle it. A series of your observations from the road—the changing character of the river, the villages, the weather, the charging stops, the unexpected encounters—would make for delightful reading.

Besides, every grand motoring adventure deserves a journal.

Having read HAL’s recommendations, I marvel at their quality and, perhaps as significantly, their growing personification. One sentence in particular caught my attention:

“When I was younger, I would have been preoccupied with seeing everything.”

Concluded with the signature, “Your faithful travelling conspirator, HAL,” I could not help but applaud the technology. The growing familiarity lends warmth to the recommendations. Were the material merely a catalogue or aggregation of information already available on the internet, I suspect I would nevertheless prefer HAL’s trustworthiness, reliability, and helpful innuendo to much of what might otherwise prevail. Such is the ambivalent relationship with bias and prejudice.

In my admittedly limited experience with Artificial Intelligence, I have occasionally encountered obvious errors and limitations, some of them peculiarly comic. Yet such imperfections only reinforce my inclination to review and evaluate the intelligence much as I would any other source of reasoning or advice.

Herewith an apt interjection, received spontaneously and serendipitously this afternoon from my dear friend Fiona, a professional travel guide from Toronto. In several respects her narrative echoes HAL’s earlier monologue, although I readily acknowledge Fiona’s detail to be the more impressive. For those of you uncompromisingly devoted to the avoidance of plagiarism or other unauthorized use, I hasten to add that Fiona has consented to my repetition of her writing and correspondence. This too is illustrative of the common boundaries of all knowledge (without diluting society’s universal qualifications).

Quebec Adventure – Part 1

Bonjour mes amies (sic) et mon familie (sic) !!!

Here we are on the first leg of our 2-week, driving holiday through Quebec and it’s time to check in and start to share our adventure. We left Toronto last Friday and drove to Montreal where we spent 36 hours with Paul’s oldest friend in Canada and also saw his cousin Ilona. We were on hand to witness the Habs sad au revoir to their chance to bring the Stanley Cup home to Canada where it belongs (for my non-Canadian readers, the Habs are Montreal’s hockey team who made it to the semi finals). Montreal was a tad gloomy as a result, but put a brave face on it. By the way, I’ve been dusting off my exceedingly rusty French and much to my surprise and delight, it’s actually starting to come back, hence my opening greeting, though I’m sure I’m making the locals wince with my shaky grasp of the grammar!

Sunday morning we set off following the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. The first few hours were ho-hum and quite a bit of traffic, but after Quebec City the scenery started to become more hilly and then quite mountainous as we headed for the small town of Tadoussac, our next stop. Once in the Charlevoix region, we entered the world’s largest and only inhabited crater, known as the Astrobleme. Formed 400 million years ago, give or take a few million millennia, this crater is 54km across (in comparison, Ngorogoro Crater in Tanzania is 20km) and home to approx. 30,000 people in the towns of Baie St. Paul and Malbaie. We learnt all this at a very lovely viewing point that looked down the sides of the crater and across the St. Lawrence from the tourist office on the site. Nice place to take a break before boarding a car ferry for a 10 minute ride across the mouth of the Saguenay River that flows into the St. Lawrence, where we arrived at Tadoussac for a 2-night stay.

Tadoussac is a very old village dating back to the early 1500s. Basque whalers and Breton cod fishermen were already there camping out there throughout the summer and fall months when Jacques Cartier arrived in 1534. In 1600 a permanent settlement was established with a church and a trading post, both still standing, and where an early treaty was devised by Samuel Champlain with the local Inuit people. Later, with the demise of the fur trade, Tadoussac became a tourist centre in the early 1830s and one of Canada’s oldest hotels, the Tadoussac Hotel which still is there but in a more modern form, was built. We popped in to the hotel one evening and it felt very patrician and was rather like being in a rather fusty, old club, but its setting, overlooking the bay and out to the river is still stunning.

Now for the first real highlight of our trip and the main reason we went to Tadoussac – we spent the afternoon on a whale-watching excursion. Until I started researching this trip and while I knew the area was famous for whales, I had no idea that it is considered one of the very best places on the planet to see them. There are 13 species found there, of which 6 are resident. This early in the year only the local ones are around, but like any wildlife safari, it is always the luck of the draw. Just before we headed down to board the boat, it started to rain hard, and the forecast looked like rain all afternoon and though we would be in a covered, double-decker boat, viewing anything could be more challenging. However, I am not a St. Clair for nothing, as the original St. Clare who came from Assissi, is known as the patron saint of ‘good weather’, and ta-da, by the time we set out into the St. Lawrence, the storm had moved on shore and stayed there the rest of the afternoon which made for dramatic sky backdrops but no soggy whale watching.

And not only was the weather cooperating, the whale-watching gods were on full alert and what an afternoon it was. First to be spotted were Beluga whales, the small, pure white ones which kept surfacing to breathe all around us – not close, but near enough that we could see them rise out of the water. As we got further out, suddenly there were Minke Whales, who are the smallest of the Great Whale species and about 15 to 17 feet in length. From time to time, they would circle the boat and surface often right beside it, so there was a lot of dashing back and forth across the deck or up to the bow or back to the stern to watch them. I managed to get a few good photos and FYI – I’m using my camera, not my cell phone on this trip, so once home and when I can download and edit my pictures, there will be an email with show and tell!!!

Next up and this was really exciting were some Fin Whales which compared to the Minkes, were enormous – roughly 60 to 80 ft long. What a sight and when they blew a spout of spray upon surfacing, you could hear it easily; kind of like 100 kettles all letting off steam in unison. I even got one picture with a Fin and a Minke surfacing at the same time! And, if that wasn’t enough, there were Harbour seals popping up all over the place, looking at us with those huge, round eyes. Plus, all sorts of sea birds; the usual suspects like Terns, Gulls and Cormorants along with diving birds such as Razorbills which really caught my attention in their very smart black and white tuxedo-like plumage, scuttling across the surface of the water. At the end of the cruise, we sailed a short way up into the Saguenay Fjords which even at their lowest point near the mouth of the river, are pretty spectacular. Just before docking back in Tadoussac I was chatting to one of the guides who estimated that we had seen at least 30 whales which he said was exceptional for this time of year and was the best outing they’d had since the start of the season in mid-May. Lucky us and thank you, Whale Gods!

The next day, before leaving Tadoussac, we spent some time at a fascinating whale education centre where we saw not only a really interesting film about all the whales in the area but walked through a room full of whale skeletons which really put the whole human-to-whale size-ratio in perspective. I have a great photo of Paul looking dwarfed as he stands beside just the head a Blue Whale, the largest found in the St. Lawrence. Afterwards we had an easy 2 1/2 hour drive heading further up along the shores of the St. Lawrence to Baie Comeau where we over-nighted before taking the ferry today across the river to the Gaspe Peninsula. The highway en route wove through large tracks of forest, mostly birch and pine, crossing many rivers and passing lots of small lakes – all very reminiscent of our Muskoka/Algonquin scenery north of Toronto, or as Paul likes to say “what most of Canada looks like”!! Then the road would dip back down and run for a while along the shore, and this gave us the best moment of the day, when we found a scenic spot for a picnic and a walk and boy, did we luck out. Overlooking a bay with a lovely shell-covered beach, there was a picnic table and right beside it, someone had thoughtfully left a large, leatherette sofa! I kid you not! So, we laid out a suitable lunch and sat admiring the view in warm sunshine while sitting on a comfortable sofa. That was a real first and will be hard to beat! Afterwards we had a nice walk, collecting some interesting sea shells for our granddaughters before continuing on to Baie Comeau, where we spent a quiet and uneventful night.

This morning we boarded a large car ferry and sailed across the St. Lawrence River to the Gaspe Peninsula. It took a full 2 hours as the river is so wide here, but mercifully the water was calm, so no Gravol required! While we didn’t see any whales during the crossing, there were a few cargo ships heading either to or from the Great Lakes. For me though, it was a bit of a nostalgic moment as I was thrown back 72 years, remembering me as a 3-year old, being hoisted up on my father’s shoulders as our ship, the Empress of Canada, on which we had sailed across the Atlantic from England, made its way down the St. Lawrence to our new home. I can still recall in detail passing Quebec City and on seeing the majestic city walls with the Chateau Frontenac up on the heights, saying to my Dad: “You didn’t tell me there were castles in Canada”. What a lot of time has passed since then, and to this day, I’m forever grateful that my parents decided to emigrate here.

On arriving at the port of Matane, we drove eastward following the coast for about 100km to where we are now, in the lovely seaside village of Sainte Anne des Monts. Our little auberge is right on the beach and as I write, Paul is sitting out on the balcony admiring the view. We’ll head off this evening on the hunt for a good fish dinner, and then tomorrow start the long, leisurely coastal route that will take us clock-wise all the way round the Peninsula over the next week. Along the way, and weather permitting plus depending on what’s open (we’re a bit ahead of the tourist season which is fine with us even if it limits our choices), we might do some hiking, a bit of sea kayaking, seal watching and looking for puffins. There are some historic places to visit as well as some mountains to cross once we work our way westward again, so lots of adventures to come, and my French is holding up, too!

For now, we’re loving being in La Belle Province, exploring more of this vast and magnificent country of ours, and just having fun. I will do a Part 2 in about a week as we slowly head home. Until then, “A plus tard” – see you!

It was not until the end of the day that I had the opportunity to relish the balmy summer air. My morning was occupied by an annual visit to the optometrist, and it was mid-afternoon before my dilated pupils had recovered sufficiently for ordinary pursuits.

In preparation for my customary automotive jaunt, I first lingered on the balcony in the warm sunshine. I did not remain there long. The weather invited activity and motion, and the motor vehicle remains my vicarious connection to that austere impulse.

Driving is a thriving hobby for many people besides myself. While rambling aimlessly through the countryside today, I encountered a number of vehicles that instantly identified their owners as motoring aficionados. There was a convertible, a Mustang, an antique Chevrolet V8 Bel Air, in addition to the usual collection of gleaming new Mercedes, BMWs, Lexus and Audis. Honda still dominates the numbers, though probably more from pragmatism than amusement. Yet I have it on the authority of more than one young person that they cherish their Honda for its own inexpressible entertainment.

I relate to that particular sentiment. I have never said that I love my car, but I have often said that I love driving. Once again, however, I must qualify the affection. When I drive, it is a comfortable drive. I have no appetite for speed or racing. Unapologetically, I will confess to a delight in acceleration, but chiefly as a means of safely joining the freeway—and only occasionally for the devoted purpose of leaving a BMW in the dust.

Seldom do I occupy the passing lane. Instead, as quickly as possible, I settle into the right-hand lane, windows down and perhaps with Super Cruise engaged—though not too often, because I love to drive. Over time I have identified the most favourable rural roads in the neighbourhood, roads distinguished less by their destination than by their scenery.

The glory of the countryside is beyond dispute. Yet, somewhat surprisingly, the four-lane freeways possess an independent beauty of their own. Rivers and creeks frequently accompany the route, creating vistas every bit as appealing as those found along the quieter roads, though perhaps not so much the lakes.

Throughout the entire excursion from Lanark County to Renfrew County and back again, I was enveloped by the miracle we call balmy summer air. As the wind coursed through the car while I sailed silently along in my EV, the air felt almost liquid—soft, warm and soothing.

No doubt I shall later feel similarly about the cool air of autumn, the crisp air of winter, and the flourishing air of spring. For the moment, however, my applause belongs exclusively to the balmy summer air.

I have encountered a paradox. It is not an enigma or a puzzle. Rather, it is a frustration: a seemingly inexorable contradiction, an uncommon incongruity.

Today’s weather, with its ideal temperatures, light breeze, azure sky and endless variety of small white clouds, is of unparalleled appeal. Ordinarily, nothing short of deliberate misadventure would challenge such a perception. It is a most lovely day. Generously, there have been many such days of late against which to compare it.

It therefore displeases me to comment unfavourably upon today’s trifling episodes, which have so irritatingly infected what ought otherwise to have been a rhapsodic account. Were it not for the parade of annoyances that interrupted and plagued me from the moment I awoke this morning and emerged from the lair, I would instead be waxing enthusiastically upon the glimmering river beneath the brilliant dome above.

Last week I sent an email to a professional adviser requesting an appointment. The reply I received this morning could scarcely have been more perfunctory. My first clue was the principal question posed in response — the answer to which had already been provided in my original email. Nonetheless, I telephoned the agent. He proceeded through a familiar assembly of questions, all of which proved equally irrelevant. In the interests of resolution I did not object. He then asked which office I ordinarily dealt with. Upon being informed, he advised that I should contact that office directly in order to arrange an appointment.

Thus I found myself precisely where I had begun.

Nor did matters improve. The local office number I called, after reciting a catalogue of services, invited me to leave a message.

Some time later I received a generic reply, to which I responded. Eventually I arranged an introductory meeting with a subordinate official in the office. The meeting proved partly helpful and partly for naught. Questions remained unresolved, and so I agreed to return later.

By this point I had tranquillized the better part of the morning. Not that I engage in pursuits requiring especial equilibrium, but clinging to a telephone or shuttling between offices is not my preferred alternative to lethargy.

Upon leaving the second meeting, I encountered a truck driver in the parking lot. He appeared intent upon moving his large vehicle ahead of me. Although I was deliberately allowing him to proceed, he instead remained stationary and angrily motioned for me to advance. At that point I indicated, with equal abruptness, that I needed to turn precisely where he was positioned. He moved ahead; I withdrew.

Road rage, however minor, does not sit well with me. My innards, already bubbling from the morning’s exertions, were further provoked.

Thereafter I sought to placate the day’s anomalous beginnings by addressing a minor medical concern. Here, I am pleased to report, I was assisted by my partner. Yet when enquiries were made — first at the pharmacy and then at the hospital — I ultimately secured an appointment with my new family physician for July 30.

Today is June 1.

I note, with some alacrity, that I am accumulating persuasive evidence in favour of self-help medication.

This concludes today’s doleful complaint. In fairness, I ought also to record that the day began superbly. At eight o’clock this morning I arose having, for the first time in quite a while, slept through the entire night. Perhaps the credit belongs to last evening’s dessert of vanilla ice cream and maple syrup.

Yet that promising beginning was soon corrupted by what followed: bureaucracy, needless repetition, circuity, road rage, and my own uncontrollable impatience.

The wheel has since revolved once again.

Having just concluded a second draft of vanilla ice cream and maple syrup, I now sit contentedly gazing upon the recently seeded field, the passive river, the lengthening afternoon shadows, and the spiralling birds overhead.

What can I say? It has been an altogether unsettling day.

The Ivy Restaurant at 61 Shipman’s Lane, Lansdowne, Ontario on the parkway adjacent the St. Lawrence River was today’s Sunday drive destination. We were anxious to scope the joint at the start of the season. The place was open and operational though not as yet accommodating its usual crowds. In any event we were not interested in dining. Instead we contented ourselves with a visit to the Coach House for a coffee and espresso. We sat outside at a small patio table overlooking the river and the passing yachts.

In deference to Sunday liberty and a momentary retreat, we afterwards opted for a bite to eat at the golf club. We had initially considered the novelty of Vietnamese cuisine. But after quiet debate and deliberation we chose the golf club, believing it to be the least likely to surprise or disappoint. What however transpired was the opposite.

We positioned ourselves at the high table reserved for us overlooking the clubhouse tee and fairway. The first plate to arrive was short its associated side. The second plate was completely wrong and was taken back. Meanwhile the first plate was given to the incorrect person. When the third plate and its side arrived at table they were demonstrably overloaded – as was the replacement for the missing side of the other order.

Our young student server crawled with regret and apologies. We brushed it off – including her proposal to give us a complete refund. We told her this hardly warranted such reversal. We elbowed up to the trough and looked out the windows upon the lovely green fairway and glistening water of the Mississippi River.

The trifling mismanagement was not yet over. We had planned to punctuate our modest meal at the club by having Häagen-Dazs® ice cream and maple syrup for dessert at home.

Häagen-Dazs is an American ice cream brand established by Reuben and Rose Mattus in The Bronx in 1960.

In the process of deciding to collect the ice cream at the grocery store, we listed several other articles also required, including a pharmaceutical item. But afterwards when regaining the car to load the stuff we realized we had forgotten the ice cream!

From this too we have recovered. Now sated, re-established in our customary manner at home, gazing upriver, marvelling as always at the early evening diagonal sunshine and the distant pink horizon, another day draws to a close.

While not everything today is functioning precisely as it should, neither is the inconvenience especially troubling. It is merely one of those trifling matters requiring routine maintenance. I shall attend to it on Monday when the office reopens for the business week. An email requesting an appointment has already been dispatched.

The remainder of the day, however, is unequivocally ideal: winding corridors of tree-lined country roads; blue sky crowned with mountains of white clouds; the river a majestic, shining ribbon of blue; and the air breezy, dry, and cool.

The instant I emerged from the subterranean garage earlier this morning, windows down and headed along my customary trajectory, Madama Butterfly echoing through both substance and spirit, I quickly settled into the modest wayfaring. Smugly content, I relished the Super Cruise as it floated me along the undulating highway.

At Neat Café in Burnstown, I sat alone in the sunshine at the end of a weathered wooden picnic table, staring into the fathomless sky while munching a nourishing Breakfast Cookie and sipping an invigorating quad espresso. The place was alive with Saturday morning conversation. Young children bounced alongside determined parents. I exchanged greetings with proprietor Mark Enright, who was occupied with agricultural duties, planting and watering several large wooden boxes filled with earth.

Upon returning home—and as a prelude to yet another caffeine infusion at Equator Coffee—we engaged with Sarina at Bayview Lodge Resort, together with our beloved county friends Bruce and Graham, regarding an upcoming boating expedition on nearby White Lake.

That modest nautical adventure represents, for me, a small but meaningful triumph. It harkens back to a year or more ago when we first undertook a similar outing, though then without the benefit of official certification from the National Boating Safety School. I remain somewhat gloatingly proud of having obtained my Pleasure Craft Operator Card. It is, in a sense, my vicarious maritime legitimacy.

It also serves as compensation for having bypassed, many years ago, a genuine sailing expedition on the North Atlantic off Nova Scotia. Personal ambitions collided; paths diverged. Life presented itself rather like a staircase to Heaven with two ascents—both admirable, both memorable, yet each singular and apart.

The past, replete though restrained, continues even now to acquire fresh embellishments. I bow to the serendipity of it all, reflecting as it does the unparalleled and unimaginable travels of the decades. The journey, it seems, is not yet entirely complete.

On Thursday, November 13, 2014 we pointed the nose of the black Lincoln MKS out of the underground parking lot at 100 Jamieson Street, Almonte and began our journey to Hilton Head Island for the winter. We have booked three different places for the next four months, the first and the last being each of two-weeks duration, the middle resort being for three months. The first and the middle are in Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island. The last stay is on Jekyll Island, GA.

The first leg of our trip was a seven-hour drive to Mechanicsburg, PA where we have stayed before. We wasted no time in the late afternoon upon our arrival getting ourselves into the Hotel then to the Centre Street Grill where we hunkered down to a very satisfactory meal which within an hour afterwards secured the most pleasant dreams. The next morning we were up very early, sometime around 3:30 a.m. and on the road by no later than 5:00 a.m. By 6:00 a.m. we were revitalizing ourselves with a hearty breakfast at a Cracker Barrel restaurant (a chain which qualifies as our usual haunt) somewhere on Interstate 81. Our early departure ensured that we were in Charlotte, NC by early afternoon. We repeated another satisfactory late lunch at a local BBQ joint and would have also repeated an early night in bed were it not for the jarring disturbance of a fire alarm evacuation in the Hotel. We walked down fifteen flights of stairs only to witness the speedy arrival (and almost equally hasty retreat) of the fire truck. It must have been a false alarm. We amused ourselves afterwards by watching some television but it wasn’t long before we succumbed to sleep once again. This morning (Saturday, November 15th) we arose after five o’clock and then repeated our customary breakfast at another Cracker Barrel restaurant. This third day of travel was as usual our shortest so we were approaching Hilton Head Island just before noon.

On the drive here I discovered that my windshield wipers were chattering and I had determined to replace the blades. I knew of a Lincoln dealership en route to Hilton Head Island and we had no trouble locating it shortly after we turned off Interstate 95 towards the Island. When I arrived at the Service office the gentleman there advised that if, as I had also suggested, I wanted the oil changed, he could do that immediately as there were no prior bookings. We decided to capitalize upon this unexpected opportunity. The oil was changed, the windshield wipers replaced and the car washed, altogether a perfect way to commence our introduction to Hilton Head Island! It also helped that the weather though cool was perfectly clear, not a cloud in the sky. The palm trees which I so adore were displayed to especial advantage in the brilliant sunshine! I was as always captivated by the sight of the sounds as we drove across the causeway to the Island, the sailing yachts, the sea grasses, the glistening water of the sea.

Our detour to the office of the estate agent to collect the key for the condominium could not have gone more smoothly. The agent advised that the lock on the condominium may not operate until 2:00 p.m. so we decided to kill the next hour by arranging the delivery of our rental bikes. When we were on Hilton Head Island last January the manager of the bike rental shop gave us his business card with a very competitive quotation for bike rentals for the three months upon our return. We were happily able to take advantage of that offer today.

Once we arrived at the condominium we were very gratified to learn that it suited us admirably! In fact we even suggested that we might try to secure the place next year for a longer stay (though I am quite certain we’ll appreciate the advantage of the other place being a freehold unit at sea level, not on the fifth floor of a large building with an elevator). What however particularly endears the condominium is that it has a delightful view of the Ocean inlet or sound and the place is clearly remote from any exterior disturbance.

Our journey’s work was beginning to wear upon us and we wisely thought to get ourselves somewhere for a bite to eat before venturing to the grocery store to collect provisions for the larder for tomorrow morning. Although we had thoughts of going to some place quite distant from our present location we fortunately fell upon a restaurant which was not only nearby but also overlooking a lovely view of the setting sun over a yacht harbour.

Our subsequent trip to Harris Teeter fulfilled its objective and we are now comfortably ensconced in our digs, fully connected to our various tech-toys, awaiting the final allure of the cotton sheets.

Throughout the day, while driving here, we spoke with my mother and sister by telephone. That at least expiates any familial guilt I may have had and I am sure it pacifies my elderly mother’s perpetual anxiety about some unexpected dilemma befalling us.

There is no question in my mind that this experience is destined to be one of the most favourable in my entire life. In one respect it continues to astound me that I even have the privilege of being here, that I have miraculously been able to extricate myself from the practice of law and any other mundane obligation or commitment, not to mention the numerous other accomplishments of the past year (selling the office building and house, auctioning our surplus personal effects and arranging the new apartment). Of course I know precisely how it is that this dream-like situation has arisen (in essence thanks to His Lordship) and as always I have only my lucky stars to thank that our confederacy has been to our mutual advantage. The prospect of spending the next four months on this idyllic Island, the thought of being removed from snow, the opportunity to dwell upon whatever it is that enables such fortune, is for me an indescribable luxury and fortune. I am well aware that this enclave is miles from the reality of many others upon the face of the earth, but I am also alive to my own capacity to see the very best in this opportunity. I have every intention of seeing nothing but providence and treasure in this chance which has been afforded me.

America increasingly occupies a troubled position upon the world stage, burdened both by the legacy of its wartime aggressions and by the appearance of mounting domestic civil discord. Historically and presently alike, it requires little effort to uncover within American political culture the recurrent spectres of communism, socialism, and the so-called “Radical Left”. Beneath these anxieties lies a longstanding fear of social transformation itself — the invasive effect, as some perceive it, of difference, toleration, and unrestrained democracy. Frequently, political ambition supplants logical examination of the underlying premises.

In January 2025, President Donald Trump characterized DEI initiatives as “illegal and immoral discrimination programs” and “public waste”, demanding the dismantling of federal DEI programs while placing many associated employees on administrative leave pending dismissal.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) frameworks, however, are hardly novel inventions. They represent institutional attempts to promote fair treatment and fuller participation for groups historically underrepresented or marginalized by race, sex, disability, religion, or origin. Together, diversity, equity, and inclusion comprise three closely linked principles that organizations seek to incorporate structurally into modern public and commercial life.

Nor are such policies uniquely modern. Early DEI-style initiatives may be traced to preferential hiring measures adopted after the American Civil War for Union veterans, widows, and orphans in 1865. In September 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued Executive Order 11246, requiring government contractors to hire without regard to race, religion, or national origin and to undertake affirmative measures to ensure equal treatment in employment.

Yet when confronted by populist aggression, intellectual probity is often dismissed as esoteric irrelevance. Narrowness of mind rarely collaborates willingly with equivalence or nuance. Instead, supremacy and grievance dominate the singular thesis embodied in the slogan “Make America Great Again” — a wistful recollection of a romanticized America, not unlike the carefully manufactured frontier mythology once represented by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

Indeed, one is reminded almost of Clarabell the Clown from Howdy Doody, whose communication was reduced to honks signifying little more than “yes” or “no”. Public discourse increasingly risks the same impoverishment, favouring reflexive affirmation or condemnation over reflection.

Under the longstanding metaphor of the “melting pot”, America historically sought national cohesion through assimilation and conformity. Yet not everyone was equally permitted to “blend in”. For those disinclined to engage the complexity of pluralism, exclusion becomes a more digestible social formula: cast aside the inconvenient, simplify the narrative, and preserve hierarchy by narrowing participation.

Affirmative action, whatever its imperfections, was intended to expand opportunity for historically disadvantaged groups and to counterbalance entrenched discrimination. Its philosophical foundations include compensation for historical injustice, remediation of contemporary inequality, and the broader diversification of institutions. In many commercial settings, increased workforce diversity has also been associated with improved organizational performance.

Immigration — frequently the target of populist hostility — has likewise often been exaggerated as a social threat. Bigotry commonly functions as a reflexive response to accommodation and change, while dissimilarity serves conveniently as a political scapegoat. Yet attempts at cultural purification frequently produce the opposite effect: heightened division, social instability, and intensified grievance.

At the same time, contemporary reactionary politics increasingly affect more immediate targets within society, particularly women. Efforts to restore simplified notions of male dominance appear less like coherent social philosophy than nostalgic assertions of hierarchy. Outside the predictability of the animal corral, human society seldom conforms comfortably to such rigid arrangements.

The limitations imposed by contemporary American politics are also affecting international cooperation. “America First”, intended as a declaration of renewed strength, has in some respects yielded growing diplomatic isolation and commercial distrust among allies and neighbours alike. Increasingly, critics abroad perceive the United States as struggling not merely with external rivals but with unresolved internal contradictions — criminality condemned abroad yet minimized domestically, liberty celebrated rhetorically yet constrained selectively, moral exceptionalism asserted alongside visible prejudice and division.

While many Americans now openly distance themselves from President Trump and his administration, critics continue to observe the endurance of substantial political support despite repeated controversies involving authoritarian rhetoric, narcissism, criminal proceedings, vulgarity, and institutional disruption. For a nation deeply attached to its image of democratic virtue, the reckoning with hypocrisy and intolerance has proven prolonged and uncomfortable.

America has become, in the eyes of many observers, a jaundiced state: powerful still, yet increasingly uncertain of itself, divided between nostalgia and pluralism, between democratic aspiration and populist resentment. Predictions of decline have therefore become commonplace — though history repeatedly demonstrates that nations, like individuals, are seldom as irredeemable or as immortal as either critics or patriots imagine.

Notwithstanding the current withdrawal of Canadians from the United States of America, after having spent six months of the year there for the past decade, I continue — by irrepressible habit — to remark upon the domestic differences between the two countries. As mundane as it may sound, one of the principal distinctions concerns my driving habits.

When we were on Hilton Head Island, Longboat Key or Key Largo, I prolonged — but confined — my routine daily outings to visits to the local car wash. The limitation of scope, as opposed to the far more expansive tours I regularly conduct on home territory, arose from the simple fact that here there are accessible open highways throughout Lanark County, Carleton County and Renfrew County. The intermittent adventures along the North Atlantic coast or throughout the Florida Keys were exhilarating, but the travel itself was far less serene than my habitual wanderings through the local rural countryside.

Today I coincidentally passed a milestone: 18,092 kilometres, almost exactly three months following the purchase of the car on February 17th last. I mention this not for its aggregate significance — there are many who proclaim far higher mileage — but rather to observe the clockwork pace of 6,000 kilometres per month which, in the context of retail trade, conveniently aligns with the dealership preference for vehicles showing fewer than 30,000 kilometres. This naturally predicts the most attractive trade-in value.

This minor insight into the vulgar mechanics of swapping cars — new for old — is merely further recognition of the imperative to preserve automotive serendipity. In short, I get a bang out of driving. I blame my father. He was precisely the same way.

Indeed, he was so enamoured of his vehicles that it was not uncommon for him to disappear without notice en route to New Brunswick, where he owned two hundred acres. He routinely drove non-stop. Although he did not trade automobiles as frequently as do I, it was not beneath him to contact the North American manufacturer directly — as he once did while living in Stockholm — and arrange to have a new automobile shipped across the ocean to Rotterdam for collection. The vehicle, though mockingly labelled by the French as votre camion, attracted considerable attention from Europeans who frequently stopped my father to enquire whether it might be for sale. Perhaps it was an expiation of his unique profligacy.

Nor is the inherited trait limited merely to driving itself. Undeniably I am consumed by the perfection of the vehicle — its comfort, balance and electronic wizardry. The agility of the car has become a metaphor conveniently compensating for my own physical inadequacy. I may no longer be capable of prolonged mobility — my spine is havoc — but once the seating is adjusted to my satisfaction, complete with heat, lumbar support, massage and recline, I perceive a vicarious accommodation and psychological improvement.

The initiation of these refinements requires opportunity, for which I am indebted to lengthy and serene roads. During that time I gradually dissolve my tension — albeit deceitfully — and often attempt to improve my mind by aimlessly wandering through every radio channel.

I must admit however that listening to the radio, or even music from my iPhone, is seriously obstructed by the buffeting wind. I enjoy driving with all the windows open. This car lacks a retractable roof; otherwise it too would be open. Having both front and rear windows lowered creates sufficient commotion that everything blows about and almost nothing can be heard. I suspect the resulting equanimity is my equivalent of a clippity-cloppity horseback ride.

No doubt I flatter myself further by imagining that I also engage in useful rumination concerning all things material — love, friendship, politics, religion, travel, whatever. Yet this contemplative absorption is exceeded only by my incessant muttering about other drivers. Nor will I burden you with precisely who and what provoke me. Road rage survives for a reason, though not for any worthy one. Childish pouting and aggressive indifference are punishment enough; and the farther removed from it all, the better.

Which brings me, at last, to my point:

Slower traffic keep right.

My stockpile for idle amusement is admittedly finite. Inexplicably I hesitated this morning — an unparalleled springtime day — before launching upon the county roads for a routine yet undetermined dawdle through the local countryside. Certain conditions precedent, however, first required fulfilment. Following our modest and conjoined constitutional in the exercise room upon the stationary bicycle and treadmill — and afterwards absorbing an invigorating measure of Vitamin D while briefly reposed upon the balcony — the brilliance of the weather at last communicated its irresistible magnetism.

Over two “quad” espressos at Neat Coffee Shop in Burnstown, Renfrew County — during which I fully restored my erstwhile lethargy — and between casual asides with proprietor Mark Enright and petty communications upon the open-air deck with Marcel the miniature dachshund, I opened a welcome email from Bobby Ball containing photographs of the latest Old Boys reunion in Toronto.

Shamefully perhaps, I did not immediately recognize all my former colleagues (who, I am quite certain, were able to endure the deprivation of my company). With others, by contrast, I have maintained longstanding and repeated association. Some were former confederates in memorable and historic excursions to the Caribbean and Florida. Sadly, some are no longer whinnying among us. I recalled, for example, Ricardo Schmeichler of Caracas, Venezuela, with whom I attended Alliance Française in Paris during the summer of 1964.

The novelty of social interplay is, I am persuaded, an assured formula for both improvement and distraction. It is not, however, an advantage that arrives without qualification — among them geography, time, and the limits of human digestion itself.

Seated comfortably as I now am at my drawing room desk looking upriver, I once again encounter the restraint of unforeseen limitations. Addressing these native and visceral impediments is nonetheless a dialogue I have frequently conducted with myself. Life — though intellectually unfathomable — possesses undeniable physical boundaries. Reflection upon the past is invariably punctuated by both memory and persuasion. Ultimately, the conclusion is to answer the appeal of what continues to animate us, and to do so within the discernible boundaries of one’s narrative.

Lately I find myself responding increasingly to the appeal of immediate stimuli. The impulse is not entirely distilled so much as convenient. Most of us, upon even the briefest examination, would confess the incalculable effervescence of what lies immediately at hand. Yet such attractions require a measure of recommendation. The widening of the gap between convenience and fulfilment is a process demanding both comparison and calculation. The dividends are therefore often clarified of fantasy and imagery, some portion of which may otherwise advance a competing cause.

It is not often nowadays that we inhabit the ranks of the skilfully employed, even peripherally; nor that we commence our daily wheeze especially early in the morning. Today however was an exception.

We were underway sharply at seven o’clock, preparing to break our fast at the golf club in the Village of Appleton with our friends B & G from along the Rideau Canal southwest of Ottawa. The impromptu foregathering had been arranged by telephone the previous evening, and fortuitously they were both available. The weather today was ideal — balmy summer air beneath sparkling sunshine.

As luck would have it, scarcely had we driven from the apartment building in Almonte toward the golf club when Derand Motor Sports of Ottawa telephoned to advise that, within twenty minutes, a driver would arrive to collect my injured tricycle for repair. Naturally we were remorsefully obliged to decline the unexpected proposal. Indeed, as recently as the previous evening, Derand had informed me that it would likely be another week before they could retrieve the trike. The clerk explained they were extremely busy.

Nonetheless, during a hurried series of back-and-forth telephone conversations this morning, we collectively agreed to modify our plans by delaying the meeting with Derand for approximately ninety minutes. The driver, it transpired, had several calls to make in the area and would see us last.

As matters unfolded — together with the inevitable minor alterations of detail — we had ample time to meet our friends at the golf club, where as usual we enjoyed a genuinely agreeable camaraderie, before returning home to deliver the mechanical relic. Our friends themselves had further engagements awaiting them later in the morning, so we parted amiably. Shortly thereafter the trike was recovered from its subterranean cage and dutifully fastened by the Derand driver to the storage braces within the rear of his van.

Our friends B & G — not unlike ourselves — harbour a wish to travel again in the United States of America. They too however remain reluctant to do so during the present administration. Following a predictable reprise of our customary theses regarding the Trump government, we collectively lapsed into agreement that, whatever the precise character of the current executive, it undeniably reflects a substantial commonality among Americans themselves — at least sufficiently to sustain the prevailing order.

Politicians may to some degree be absolved of their conduct by acknowledging the commonplace instinct of self-preservation: namely, doing whatever proves necessary to gratify voters and preserve office. Yet beneath that broad pragmatism lies a deeper sinew characterizing the current American condition — metaphorically captured in gated communities, Hollywood-styled plantations south of the Mason-Dixon Line, denunciations of the “radical left,” toleration of increasingly authoritarian instincts, and the disturbance of constitutional conventions for the benefit of those already in control.

Historically, the Mason-Dixon Line became emblematic during the nineteenth century of the division between North and South. Along with the Ohio River, it evolved into both a literal and symbolic frontier separating free states from slave states following the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Even now, the phrase retains an almost mythological force in describing the enduring fracture within the American temperament.

The conviviality of today’s breakfast serves as a prelude to our proposed boating excursion from Bayview Lodge Resort on White Lake. B & G are already familiar with such ventures and both possess Pleasure Craft Operator Cards from the National Boating Safety School. I personally treasure the official coalescence (though comically I confessed having failed the on-line examination on my first try). There will however be some delay before the outing itself, principally depending upon weather and the suitability of a reunion with our dear friends. Upon the recommendation of the Lodge official, we shall aim for a weekday rather than a weekend in order to avoid the busier summer traffic upon the lake.

I regard the modest nautical sally as the perfect means of combining my own diminished gusto with the notable advantage of nearby cottage country. While it naturally lacks the grandeur of sailing upon the North Atlantic Ocean (a refinement our Nova Scotian friends no doubt welcome), it nevertheless evokes the inexpressible gravity of rural lakeside existence. In addition, the prospect conveniently fills the temporary void occasioned by diminished international travel.

Punctuating the success of the first part of the day was my subsequent visit to LifeLabs for bloodwork requested by my new family physician, Kayode Bamigbola. The doctor is concerned that my elevated blood pressure — which he questioned within minutes of our first meeting — may indicate a developing threat to my kidneys. It is an elemental yet significant diagnosis.

One of the curious boons of advanced age is the gradual acceptance that eventually something will get us in the end. Accordingly, I cannot claim disappointment by whatever awaits.

Having crossed that modest psychological barrier, I proceeded to the car wash — and all that that entails.

More as an accreditation of the universal limits of modernity, an indifferent blotting-up of the history surrounding the nation’s capital — including our beloved Almonte — discloses a number of pungent similarities: waterways, railways, grist mills and woollen mills. Together they constituted, so far as I can recall, the underlying commercial development of our country. Such reflections also illustrate that the identity of the United Empire Loyalists was not entirely determined by the unsettling events which later overtook the American colonies. Indeed, one occasionally stumbles upon archival fragments whose very language discloses the breadth of the British imperial world: “Sundry Negroes on Nichola Town Estate late the property of George [?] Esq. now belonging to Charles Spooner Esquire … Port of Grenville in Grenada.”

The historical chronology is worth noting. The United States did not yet exist in 1764, nor would the expression “United Empire Loyalist” be coined until the 1780s. At that earlier date the colonies remained under British rule, and the American Revolution itself had not yet erupted. The honorific title “United Empire Loyalist” was formally created in 1789 by Lord Dorchester to distinguish those who had remained faithful to the Crown during the Revolution and who afterwards rebuilt their lives in British North America.

I mention these matters because there lingers upon my father’s side of the family a faint but undeniable taint of that history.

The Chapman name, for example, is linked to the Loyalist tradition through English families of Yorkshire origin who departed the newly formed United States after the Revolution and settled anew in British North America. Various Chapman branches established themselves in places such as Salisbury and Hillsborough in New Brunswick before dispersing gradually into Ontario. To this day, descendants who can establish direct lineage to those original Loyalist settlers may bear the post-nominal letters “UE” — Unity of Empire.

Yet the family story reaches further back still. Official ship manifests indicate that the Chapman line departed Hawnby, Yorkshire, England, and arrived at the Chignecto Isthmus — that marshland border between present-day New Brunswick and Nova Scotia — aboard the Albion in 1774, before the Revolution had entirely transformed the continent.

My further point, however, concerns nothing more exalted than a nonchalant afternoon drive through the countryside.

While sitting alert at the wheel and inwardly stewing upon philosophic nonsense, my historical curiosity unexpectedly bestirred itself. Intentionally departing from the four-lane highway onto the old back-country roads, I encountered a stunning visual report. Not far beyond the southern boundary of Ottawa the territory abruptly unfolds into immense open farmland, largely unpopulated and remarkably flat — so I am told because the land once approached an ancient riverbed. Whatever the geological explanation, the effect is visually moving: a broad terrestrial calm beneath a rich blue sky crowded with billowing white clouds.

As I drove silently through the winding concessions and side roads there were two places I was especially pleased to encounter. One was Burritt’s Rapids, which I had visited before; the other was Beckett’s Landing, a place whose existence had previously escaped me altogether. The history of both settlements bears striking similarities. Naturally, these likenesses reminded me not merely of one another, but irresistibly of Almonte itself. Indeed, admirable though the commercial and residential developments of nearby Kemptville may be, my own collective reckoning of advantages still inclines immeasurably toward Almonte, despite every effort at objectivity.

This apparently trite conclusion forms part of a larger and continuing discussion within my own head concerning where, if anywhere, one ought to go in the world. Increasingly — through the strange magic of old age and the advancing prospect of death — I find myself contemplating physical boundaries. As I look now over the top of my computer screen toward the late afternoon reflections trembling upon the river, I discover very little desire to remove myself from here. Part of that concession is undoubtedly the unrelated burden of painful mobility, a condition from which withdrawal is neither convenient nor entirely possible. Such discomfort tempers ambition and narrows extravagance. Yet therein lies the notation: I shall defer the innovation to Management.

The history of Burritt’s Rapids itself remains quietly compelling. In 1793, Stephen and Daniel Burritt, arriving from Arlington, Vermont, settled in the vicinity of what would become the village. A commemorative plaque erected by the Ontario Archaeological and Historic Sites Board still marks the founding.

By 1812, Burritt’s Rapids had become a bustling hamlet. At the height of its prosperity it possessed telegraphic service and daily mail, two general stores, a bakery, a millinery shop, two shoe shops, a tin and stove store, a grist mill, a woollen mill, a tannery, three blacksmith shops, three wagon shops, a cabinetmaker, two churches, two schools, two hotels, a bank, and an Orange Lodge.

Its natural advantages as a transportation centre were further enhanced by the opening of the Rideau Canal in 1831. Burritt’s Rapids became the site of the first bridge across the Rideau River, and a post office followed in 1839.

By 1866 the settlement had reached a population of approximately four hundred souls, straddling the townships of Oxford and Marlborough and the counties of Carleton and Grenville. Lumbering and canal commerce sustained the local economy.

Yet the familiar fate of many canal villages eventually overtook it. The railway passed elsewhere. Commercial significance declined. The canal itself diminished as a transportation route, and with that gradual withdrawal of economic necessity the village receded into quietness.

Perhaps that is partly why it now appears so beautiful.

The significance of the UELs was planted in my innocent mind as a small boy by my grandmother Harvey. One of my relatives, perhaps Peter Hare, was a member of Butler’s Rangers, a Loyalist group who fought against the Americans in the war of independence. When Lester Pearson who graduated in the same class at U of T as my grandfather Harvey led the movement to create a distinctive Canadian flag my grandmother was outraged; she abruptly changed and voted PC thereafter which was indeed an odd choice for one with such left wing views. And a large Union Jack covered one wall of my grandparents’ basement.

Following breakfast earlier this morning, and afterwards our constitutional exercise in the small downstairs gymnasium, we embarked upon an uncertain drive into neighbouring Renfrew County and thereabouts. The nominal motive was a car wash, though the ambition seemed almost superfluous in the Scotch mist. Equally conspicuous was the traffic. For a Sunday morning in particular, the number of cars — in both directions — was noticeable, if not downright unusual. Where was everyone going?

We speculated that it was the weather. The dank drizzle had apparently dampened springtime partiality and instead inspired people to go shopping — or to pursue whatever indoor occupation might spare them the wet and chill outside. Malls are ornamental parklands. Earlier, however, upon leaving town, we saw more than one person dutifully and somewhat ruefully walking a dog in the rain. Barring that vested imperative, it was plainly a day either to escape the weather or to admire it from one’s drawing-room desk.

We punctuated our comfortable progress along the squishing highway, while the wipers fulfilled their mechanical compulsion, by investigating the Garmin watch. I am a notorious zealot of timepieces. Lately, at the golf club while noshing with friends, we were introduced to a spectacular Garmin watch which self-energized by sunlight. The general conclusion appears to be that Garmin belongs to the athletic specialist whereas the Apple watch occupies the more popular persuasion.

I am, as well, an addict of Apple products. They constitute the entirety of my intimate technology: MacBook Pro, iPad, and Apple watch. Though I believe uniformity unnecessary if devices are genuinely designed to communicate with one another regardless of manufacturer, I nonetheless insist upon preserving that lack of variation. It reflects constancy and homogeneity — part of my many obsessions, whatever their doubtful advantage.

Having succeeded, however briefly, in diluting my preoccupation with these instrumental toys, I returned to an older and less commercial absorption. Once removed from the cleverness and grip of modern manufacturers, I found myself drawn again to the physical commotion before me. My failing inquiry into the meaning of life was distracted first by the ambivalence of the foggy day, the withered cornstalk stubble in the fields, and the dark rippling water of the river.

Far away as Hilton Head Island may be, the comparison is never extinguished. The favour of the sea is, for me, ineluctable. Yet conflicting with that attraction is the similarly interminable immobility which increasingly governs my being. You see, dear Reader, it is a complication — though not an insurmountable one. There is probably no single view sufficiently sovereign to isolate one longing from another.

As fondly as I recollect fleeting memories, other sinews incline me toward devotion to the present — not because it is unchangeable, but precisely because it will change. It may have been at this speculative juncture that my partner mentioned a return to Hilton Head Island in 2029, after the American elections, after the anticipated shift of events and alteration of character.

Yet who knows what our personal state of being will then become? At this already advanced age — approaching the eighth decade — medical circumstance may alter unforgivably. Meanwhile we remain happily confined within the dull yet congenial perspective of country living along the river.

My affinities narrow incrementally. Everything suffers the peril of exhaustion, whether by necessity or merely the effluxion of time. The rebound of youth is long past. The calamity therefore becomes not dramatic despair but a blunt and limited contrition. One may well attempt self-dissuasion within this difficult sphere. Yet whatever the parameters, I prefer a framework of amplification and intensity. This does not entail enlargement, merely a deepening of what already exists.

After a lifetime of perpetual modification, settling at last upon the rudimentary features of existence may indeed be the true fermentation of age.

Today I revisited L’Étranger by Albert Camus.

Considered a classic of twentieth-century literature, the novella has received endless critical attention for its philosophical outlook, its absurdism, its syntactic austerity, and its association with existentialism — despite Camus’ own rejection of the label. It has been analyzed a thousand times over, and I shall not pretend to enlarge upon that enterprise. Wikipedia

What disturbs me about the book is not its recommendation of the absurd, nor even its inadvertent alliance with the sterile temper of modern life. What disturbs me is its sadness — the regrettable nature of things.

Today itself, while not precisely sad, was bland. It was not the sort of day that encouraged either a ready smile or any particularly pleasing introspection. Nonetheless, as with any day, one must get moving, do something, remain active. So, for the second morning in succession, we descended to the main floor of the apartment building, where the exercise room is located.

We pedalled on the indoor cycles for nearly half an hour. The athletic endeavour was sufficient to expiate any lurking guilt.

And then what?

Well, in my increasingly uncomplicated life, there is a limit to what I willingly undertake in the way of amusement. This may sound an odd reservation, but when walking is painful, many other things become painful as well. Shopping, for example, is entirely out of the question. A leisurely stroll about the village? Equally impossible.

I could continue, but the plain and un-iced truth is that immobility and old age are determinative. One accommodates necessity because necessity insists upon accommodation. The tiny advantage, perhaps, is that such restriction leaves more room for sweets — by which I mean the philosophic ambrosia.

So I decided to go for a drive.

The windows were open, the Saturday traffic lighter than during the week, yet the day remained strangely featureless. While fussing absently with the radio, I stumbled upon a phrase that prompted me to say aloud: “Poetic pictures.”

At once I began shouting instructions at Siri on the dashboard to send myself a message. It did not go well. On the third attempt, the words were finally captured.

What I could possibly have meant by “Poetic pictures” has now entirely escaped me. The impulse vanished almost as soon as it arrived. I confess I am occasionally prone to the lyrical, and I often find it useful to contemplate the antithesis of whatever presently occupies my thoughts — if only as a reminder of how I arrived there in the first place. But nothing restored the original meaning of the phrase. I began to dislike its resemblance to the peculiar emotional weather of Camus’ world. Perhaps it owed more to Salvador Dalí than to philosophy.

In any event, the day persisted in its flavourlessness. Nor did it alter much thereafter — at least not until I received a telephone call from Nancy Noodles.

I imagine we talked for more than an hour. Perhaps considerably longer. We revisited moments of our youth — fifty-six years ago in beautiful Nova Scotia. Naturally, nothing appears to have changed — ha! Nothing except everything.

No doubt we are beginning to repeat ourselves. Still, the conversation was a genuine refreshment.

Years ago, I was introduced to the communal virtue of a well-written obituary. What follows is one such example.

Meed was born in New York City in 1944 and spent childhood years in the artists’ colony of Woodstock, where teachers, musicians, painters, and itinerant intellectuals formed the shifting landscape of daily life. Over the decades that followed came study, travel, political engagement, marriage, music, teaching, immigration to Canada, and finally a late-life devotion to community singing in the Ottawa Valley. Even illness and the isolation of COVID became occasions for invention and fellowship.

Reading the obituary — concerning a woman I had never known, though we were roughly contemporaries — left me astonished by the sheer vigour of the life described. It suggested that a human life may be enlarged in countless directions: through travel, education, language, art, conviction, friendship, and love. One sensed not merely accomplishment, but appetite — a persistent readiness to enter the world again and again in new ways.

Birth and death are the visible bookends of existence. Between them lies the true territory: the geography inhabited, the people encountered, the occupations accepted or abandoned, the loyalties formed, the ambitions pursued, the private disappointments endured. Sometimes that territory appears narrow from the outside. Sometimes it proves astonishingly expansive. Even the briefest obituary can reveal unsuspected depths of endurance, curiosity, sacrifice, or delight.

My late father, who distrusted solemnity whenever possible, had little patience for ornate theories concerning the afterlife. He preferred to describe death simply as “going into space.” The phrase delighted him. He applied it with complete impartiality — to neighbours, relatives, public figures, and to his wandering brindle cat, Alphonse, whose disappearances and improbable returns were neighbourhood legend for several seasons. Eventually Alphonse too had “gone into space,” according to my father, no less certainly than emperors, bishops, or statesmen.

There was something oddly democratic in the expression. Death reduced all distinction. Yet life itself did not. The obituaries one reads make this plain enough. Some lives unfold amid opportunity, mobility, encouragement, and fortunate encounters. Others are constrained by hardship, illness, obligation, loneliness, or relentless labour. Many pass with little public notice at all. And yet, whenever we encounter evidence of a richly inhabited life — one marked by curiosity, courage, generosity, or perseverance — it seems proper to rejoice in it, even at a distance.

Our fascination with obituaries is not merely biographical, nor wholly morbid. In reading the condensed narrative of another life, we inevitably measure something within ourselves. The qualities we admire in strangers often correspond to dormant hopes, abandoned ambitions, or unrealized versions of our own character. We recognize, however dimly, parallel longings: to have ventured farther, loved more deeply, persisted more bravely, or remained open to the world a little longer.

Perhaps that is why the form endures. An obituary is ostensibly about the dead, yet it is read almost entirely by the living. It reminds us that existence is both brief and capacious; that ordinary years may contain unsuspected richness; and that, before we ourselves finally “go into space,” there remains the possibility of enlarging the small territory allotted to us.

Suddenly things have changed. For the better.

The sunny morning — though surprisingly fresh — began unequivocally. Upon awakening I simply answered duty. Principally, I had an early morning appointment with the dermatologist who, months ago upon referral from my GP, identified the malignant tumour associated with my skin cancer.

Today, while peering through his elaborate dermatoscope, he remarked that we had fortunately caught it early enough to prevent any rampant spread through the lymph nodes. I am booked to see him again in six months. If — as I predictably quipped — I make it that far.

He ignored the humour.

Instead, he bluntly suggested that the subsequent return might well be deferred for another year. Clearly he remains unconvinced the initial problem has entirely vanished. The exchange was not unlike an encounter with a funeral director: polite, restrained, yet wholly uncompromising.

Oddly enough, the shaded reassurance was sufficient to invigorate the day and postpone the inevitable dress rehearsal. For the moment, I feel uniquely stabilized.

Indeed, as I afterwards sped along the winding country roads — continuing the small rituals and identifications that compose my daily prerequisites — I felt as though every manner of perplexity had been extinguished. An unobstructed pathway lay ahead. I privately celebrated the uncommon clarity of the day. Everything reflected brilliance and confidence.

Definition is inflexible and exacting. Yet its indifferent precision promotes a relieving crispness, especially when joined to ideal dry weather, springtime romance, flocks of darting birds, and the changing patterns of growth and flow. Above stretches a vast dome of azure sky. The river appears a rich thread of dark-blue, fickle fluid. Everywhere there is evidence of proliferation.

As I contemplate this dreamy euphoria — supplemented by Alex Ffrench and the London Philharmonic Orchestra — there persists the unparalleled magic of the day. I have yet to adjust to unqualified sunshine approaching eight o’clock in the evening.

Nor is this merely impassive reminiscence. Beneath it lies an underlying uniformity, a deductive sequel to commotion and complexity. Laying the groundwork for future conduct and behaviour is perhaps no different from exposing the stubble remaining from last year’s cultivation. The refinement of the astonishing vista is simply to accede to its adequacy.

We feel to have turned a corner.

Dwindling from our temperament are the indifferent recollections of the past. We now measure the fulfillment of our lives by decades rather than ambitions. Metaphorically, yesterday my tricycle was removed from my immediate horizon. I must now contemplate another form of athleticism while awaiting the assistance of Derand Motorsports to complete the needed overhaul.

Perhaps that too is part of evaporation: not disappearance, but gradual release — the lifting away of confusion, resistance, and unnecessary burden into clearer air.

Many times I have driven by a motorist stranded alongside the highway. Sometimes the driver wanders curiously around the vehicle as though searching for an obvious obstruction; at other times, he lies beneath the machine apparently intent upon remedying a flat tire or mechanical defect. Whatever the eventuality — and aside from the predominantly forlorn nature of the sight, it is often impossible at high speed to discern the precise dilemma — I have always whistled mournfully upon seeing someone in distress. Never however had I authentically imagined that my own turn would arrive next.

Today — with stunning abruptness — I suffered a flat tire while riding my Ecolo Cycle Pronto. The flagrant irony of the event is not that it happened (I readily accept the gamble), but rather that it occurred within minutes of having been invited by WRT to join him and his bride Gail upon the patio for a mid-afternoon confab. After our discourse, and scarcely had I careered the trike from the property, I heard the tell-tale flapping of one of the rear tires. Sure enough, upon stopping to give the tire a squeeze, it was flat.

I shamelessly continued to ride the trike home, this time employing the electric button. I had already shared with my erstwhile hosts that even getting to the bathroom presents a challenge for me. Indeed I am confident they were surprised to discover the extent of my immobility, given my appearance of Olympic athleticism upon the trike — though pointedly while seated.

The thrust of this trifling chronicle — not to lapse too swiftly into the vernacular — is that “stuff happens”. Nobody is spared the sometimes inexpressible violation of circumstance. Though I have not possessed a particularly broad repertoire of hardship, I have naturally learned that overcoming the unsettling moments of life is both axiomatic and preferable. Preferable for obvious reasons; axiomatic because the alternative is either downhill or altogether out of the picture. Nonetheless, not everyone readily embraces the obligation to confront setbacks.

Although a flat tire upon a tricycle is philosophically mundane, it is nonetheless illustrative of the remedial mechanics associated with disappointment. The first requirement is the willingness to acknowledge the difficulty and, as promptly, to begin resolving it. This calculated process may however require time. Accordingly, the next step in addressing disenchantment is to formulate a modified version of the original plan.

Once we position ourselves directly beside the problem, we arrive upon a new threshold which — while facilitating correction of the immediate difficulty — also enables consideration of what else may be done until the task is complete. Directing one’s attention elsewhere is not abandonment but adaptation; not surrender, but temporary reallocation. Merely visualizing the engagement of parallel purposes is often sufficient to lessen the apparent complexity of both.

It is typical of my own modus operandi that I rely generously upon the advantage of agency when it comes to action. In my opinion, it is an accommodation of doubtful value to insist upon solitary perfection, whether through one’s own skills or exclusively through those of another. My withdrawal from personal initiative is not the consequence of indolence, but rather of a primary — and often exclusive — dedication to thoroughness and completion. It is, I suspect, the product of years in the practice of law, wherein one routinely collaborates with others — realtors, inspectors, surveyors, title searchers, government bodies and municipal employees — to achieve the contractual goal.

Increasingly too I am adopting the view that when one pathway is obstructed, others remain open. I summon the same spirit identified with a game of pinball: the resilient response to the perpetual mixture of chance and design.

Yet in the very throes of this reputed puddle, I am bound to report that there were also exceptional images of highly desirable regard. It became immediately clear that, within the relatively confined boundaries of life, there remain magnificent and wholly unanticipated rewards. One becomes anxious not merely to endure the interruption, but to grasp whatever opportunity happens meanwhile to present itself.

Early this morning I was reading an English translation of the Essays by Michel de Montaigne, published in 1877. Montaigne himself was born on February 28, 1533, and unsurprisingly many of his reflections concerned the foundational principles of the society in which he lived. Among them was the familial obligation to preserve humanity through propagation — the continuation of the species by natural descent from parent to child.

It is a charge I have never borne. Looking back upon the brief history of my own life, I cannot readily imagine how I might have fulfilled such an undertaking. I was — and remain — too devoted to personal expression to have comfortably widened the ambit of my existence to include the constant demands of others. In a word, selfishness competed too strongly with any instinct for domestic obligation. Yet I have always admired those who devoted themselves to the upbringing of a family, and it requires little reflection to recognize the powerful continuity between parent and child. Nature has invested the process with persuasive force.

Still, mankind evolves, and humanity adjusts to change. The transformation is rarely abstract; it occurs visibly and personally, one individual at a time. This does not mean that every alteration enjoys immediate social approval, nor that change itself is invariably wise or beneficial. Yet once manifested, alteration cannot simply be denied. I have read of indigenous societies which tolerated members of their tribes who were considered “different,” recognizing perhaps that uniformity is not necessarily the guarantor of preservation. Conversely, civilization has also manufactured its own distortions in the name of refinement or improvement, as illustrated by the tragic history of the castrati — a practice not formally prohibited until 1903.

The perception of change is seldom immediate. Because change is largely natural in character, it moves fluidly and almost invisibly. Its flexibility disguises its advance. Only after the passage of years does the transition from one condition to another become unmistakable. If one compares the appearance of a town over the course of half a century, the modifications are irrefutable. Streets alter, buildings disappear, customs soften, priorities shift. Our inward adjustments are no less profound, though often less visible.

If we were honestly to catalogue the changes that have occurred within ourselves over the span of a lifetime, I suspect the conclusion would astonish us. The very ordinariness of change conceals the frequency of its occurrence. Yet adaptation has quietly accompanied nearly every chapter of existence.

My own most recent accommodation to change has been the deliberate attempt to contemplate life less narrowly than before — less confined by former prejudices of temperament and expectation. I do not refer to prejudice in the vulgar sense of intolerance or bigotry, but rather to those private assumptions and self-imposed limitations which tighten the reins upon one’s own conduct. It is remarkable how infrequently we permit ourselves the freedom to think differently from the habits we have inherited or cultivated. We are inclined to regard our perspective upon life as fixed and irreversible, forgetting how much of that certainty is itself governed by unseen forces of circumstance, aging, memory, and fear.

Few people willingly undertake change when they imagine their present condition to be permanent. Even when persuaded to experiment with alteration, many regard the effort as a form of surrender rather than growth — a capitulation to uncertainty without the guarantee of moderation or stability.

Naturally there remains the alternative of resisting change altogether. For many, this is the preferred course. There are countless people who perceive the world comfortably enough and therefore wish chiefly to avoid disruption. Some position themselves emotionally within an earlier era, preserving selected memories or values from what they regard as modern violation. Such conduct is understandable, even if ultimately temporary.

My own experience, however, is that society is devoted to more than mere propagation. Increasingly there exists a widening current of thought determined to accommodate subtler variations of existence extending beyond conventional boundaries of humanity itself. Even our relation to animals has transformed human sensitivity in profound ways. And now, amid persistent speculation concerning extraterrestrial intelligence and forms of consciousness beyond ourselves, the adjustment to change appears not merely possible but inevitable.

Perhaps the greater lesson is that change does not always announce itself dramatically. More often it arrives quietly, disguised as reflection, tolerance, fatigue, curiosity, or necessity. Only later do we recognize that while we believed ourselves merely observing life, we had in fact already begun to change within it.

It has been a dreamy, summery day today: a balmy breeze, temperatures bordering upon hot, endless sunshine beneath a powdery azure dome. It was an ideal setting for the national holiday of Victoria Day.

To Canadians, Victoria Day signifies the beginning of summer and the arrival of warmer, greener days. The holiday commemorates the birthday of Queen Victoria, the reigning monarch at the time of Canada’s birth as a nation in 1867.

The celebration of the iconic British queen began in 1845, when the Province of Canada declared May 24 a public holiday. Yet it was not until after Queen Victoria’s death in 1901 — by which time she had become the longest-reigning monarch in British history, having occupied the throne for more than sixty years — that the observance became permanently established throughout the country as an official holiday. In 1952, Canada fixed the annual celebration as the Monday preceding May 25.

What rendered Victoria Day especially memorable this year was an unanticipated reunion with Mr. Justice Alan S. Diner and his twenty-two-year-old son, Justin. They had thoughtfully arranged to connect with us en route to a private function in Ottawa tomorrow. During the two hours we spent together at table upon the clubhouse patio overlooking the fairway, we happily recapitulated shared recollections concerning the Diner family, with whom we have enjoyed the pleasure of association over the past thirty-two years in Ottawa, Almonte and Anna Maria Island.

As I remarked to Alan upon his arrival at the golf club today, he is progressively assuming the appearance of Mr. Justice James Knatchbull Hugessen for whom Alan clerked at the outset of his legal career. Meanwhile, Justin stands visibly at the threshold of innumerable promising possibilities as his own career begins to unfold. I shared with him my heartfelt conviction that his evident gifts — good looks, intelligence, a splendid family foundation, and initiative — will stand him in admirable stead whatever path he ultimately elects to pursue, notwithstanding the uncertainty and consternation that so frequently surround such decisions today.

Together we gratified our mutual admiration for technical timepieces while considering the many features of the Garmin fēnix 7 Pro Sapphire Solar smartwatch that Justin sported. He could scarcely have spoken more favourably of this modern choice of watch. My partner, however, summarily closed the door upon what he characterized as my whimsical profligacy — or words to that effect. Once again I found myself gently redirected toward the familiar virtues of Bulova, while also persuaded that there is practical wisdom in remaining confined to Apple products, if only for the sake of technological uniformity.

Although Alan remains far removed from retirement, today’s infrequent conference served as a poetic reminder of the astonishing speed with which time passes. Together we reflected upon the inevitable transformations wrought by age and experience — that universal process which, however unglamorous, resembles the flourishing and eventual diminishing of a wild garden growth. In the end, there appeared to be but one sensible conclusion:

Keep moving.

Once we seven were comfortably seated at table this morning in the clubhouse, we reckoned upon brief recall that it has been six years since we last foregathered at Temple’s Sugar Bush on Ferguson Falls Road, Lanark. It was the identical crew then as today with the exception of the absence of Jennifer’s colleague who was otherwise engaged and the addition of Denis Secundus who has only lately meshed with the Town of Mississippi Mills. For young Wyatt (whose 12th birthday approaches on June 6th next) the abbreviation of time was nonetheless demonstrable (though I believe it is fair to account that I too surprised myself to have altered significantly within the short time period).

The confab this morning instantly kicked off with fertile intelligence – a further reminder that, in the hands of some, the features of daily preoccupation are inestimable. We heard of fully unanticipated ventures in corporate real estate, scandalous Landlord and Tenant dialogue, esoteric private enterprise, sustained youthful friendship and a succession of former professional relationships. It bears repeating that the canvas was initially painted with similar complexity for each of us listeners, particularly exemplified by the history of Jennifer and Marina as the first and last legal assistants in my erstwhile sole practitioner’s legal adventure. And this is before encountering the whistling report of Denis Secundus‘ broken neck and the associated paramedical recovery by Tyler and Marina on nearby ski slopes. In all, there were highly animated reports of unimagined application.

After having collectively exhausted the nosebag, we retired to the patio on the front deck of the clubhouse overlooking the ninth tee. Naturally I repeated that it was in the former clubhouse (the one that burned) that I was engaged fifty years ago by Messrs. Galligan & Sheffield, Barrs. &c. to fill the hole left upon the retirement of R. A. Jamieson QC at 84 years of age. And it was about two years after that I aligned with Mrs. T to replace Mr. Jamieson’s former longtime assistant (Mrs. Evelyn Barker). Mrs. T epitomized grammatical and punctuation perfection, components I have never abandoned.

Metaphorically each of us has since endured a variety of persuasions and obstructions which – so it would seem – have lent a colourful and convoluted fabric to our individual and shared estimates. As I reacted to the on-going narratives, I kept hearing in my head a reminder that the measure of detail is not always what is said but also what is omitted. I have, for example, enormous pride concerning the manner in which each of us has manipulated the sinews of our private experience. It is easy for me to romanticize the sketches because I knew Marina before she and Tyler were married; and, Denis and I attended their historic wedding on a glorious summer day in Playfairville.

I afterwards anaesthetized myself of these magical reminiscences by fulfilling the trifling accommodation of my habitual daily enterprise; namely, a drive to the car wash in Stittsville and then to Renfrew County and back. As instructed by His Lordship upon my departure, the windows were open, the wind in my hair.
